Kharkov region is located on the North-East of Ukraine on the verge of forest-steppe and steppe physic-geographical zones and occupies the South-West outskirts of Srednerusskoy sublimity. The territory of the region is 31,4 thousands sq km which is 5,2 % of territory of Ukraine. The region is characterized of the large compactness that in the conditions of flat relief very assists to the development of economic connections.

The region is crossed by main ferrous and highway roads, through which it has an output to Donbass, Crimea, Caucasus, to ports of Black, Azovsk and Baltic Sees, to many industrial centers outside Ukraine.

Minerals of the region are presented by natural gas (Efremivsky, Zakhidno-Krestischensky, Kegichivsky and other deposits), oil, anthracite and brown coal, rock-salt, phosphorus, ochre, clay, sands, limestone, chalk.

The region is rich for the sources of mineral waters – Berezivsky, Ray-Elenivsky and others.

The region is located on the watershed of Don and Dnypro. There are 156 rivers with length more than 10 km. The most large are: Siversky Donec (length is 380 km within the limits of area), Orel (length is 200 km) within the limits of area, Oskil (length is 177 km within the limits of area).

Administrative-territory division show
The region consists of 27 administrative districts, 7 cities of regional submission, 10 cities of district submission, 60 settlements, 1694 rural settlements. Kharkov is an administrative center. It is second-largest city after Kiev in Ukraine.

Kharkov region borders on Belgorod region of Russian Federation on the North and on the North-East, on Lugansk on the East – with, on Donetsk - on the South-East, on Dnepropetrovsk – on the South-West, on Poltava and Sumsky regions of Ukraine – on the North-West.

Economy show
Kharkov region disposes a powerful pertaining to national economy complex, presented basically by all industries, which are present in economy’s braches of Ukraine. Ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy (except for small maximum and auxiliary productions), forest, hydrolyzed, petrochemical industry and water types of transport are absent by virtue of number of reasons. On the stake of industry there is a more than 50% GDP of the region. The other 50% belong to such industries of economy, as transport and agriculture. An important place in the structure of GDP is occupied by trade and public catering. Kharkov is one of the largest shopping centers of Ukraine.

Industry specializations in Ukraine economy are: machine engineering, production of build materials, gas, light and food industries etc.

The functional-branches of structure of region’s industry is characterized by a high specific gravity of heavy industry. The main place occupies the largest in Ukraine machine-building complex here. In Kharkov there are the largest enterprises of VPK is a state enterprise "Factory name after Malysheva" (production of tanks and other bronetechniks), JSC «Khartron" (production of control system for rockets and space vehicles).
The Kharkov aviation enterprise (KHAZ) produces both civil and soldiery airplanes. A tractor and agricultural engineering are also developed: JSC "Kharkov tractor factory", a motor-building factory «Serp and molot", factories of tractor engines and tractor self-propelled undercarriages. Kharkov region is a basic district of power machine engineering in Ukraine. The leading enterprises of power machine engineering are: JSC "Elektrotyazhmash" and JSC "Turboatom".

Such giants of electrical machine engineering, as electro mechanics (GNPO "KHEMZ"), electrical engineering (KHELZ), electro-vehicle factories, propulsion MODULE of "Yuzhkabel' are situated in Kharkov ". The special place in the structure of machine-building complex is occupied by equipment-instrumental and instrumental industry. JSC "Kharkov machine-tool plant" is the largest machine-tool enterprise of Ukraine.

The region takes the first place in Ukraine by production of goods of instrument-making. Decreasing of the production the last years resulted in that an engineer was lost by position of main industry. In the structure of industry it occupies 28,2%, while food industry with 30,9% took the first place. The main enterprises of industry are located in JSC "Pivzavod of "Rogan'", tobacco factory "Filipp Morris-Ukraine", "Kharkov zhirkombinat", biscuit factory. 17,1% in the industry’s structure takes power production, gas and water. There is one of the biggest in Ukraine Thermo Power Plant situated in the region.

Gas mining (one of the first places in Ukraine) and cement production of JSC “Balcem" Balakleya marked out in the other industries. The special place in the structure of machine-building complex is occupied by equipment-instrumental and instrumental industry. There is the largest in Ukraine machine-tool factory located here. The region takes the first place in Ukraine on the instrument-making goods production.
